Optional Practical Training (OPT) is one of the most valuable benefits of your F-1 student visa. It allows you to work in the United States for up to 12 months in a position directly related to your major field of study. But the application process involves multiple government agencies, strict deadlines, and paperwork that must be exactly right. One wrong date or missing signature can delay your work authorization by months.

Before You Start: Eligibility Check

Before investing time in the application, confirm you meet the basic requirements for OPT:

Valid F-1 status: You must have been in lawful F-1 status for at least one full academic year (two consecutive semesters of full-time enrollment).
Degree program completion: For post-completion OPT, you must be within 90 days before or 60 days after your program end date.
No prior OPT at the same degree level: You can only use 12 months of OPT per degree level. If you used 12 months of OPT after a bachelor's degree, you cannot get OPT again until you complete a higher degree (e.g., master's).
Employment related to your major: Your intended employment must be directly related to your field of study as listed on your I-20.

If you previously used pre-completion OPT, any time used at that degree level will be deducted from your 12-month total. For example, if you used 4 months of full-time pre-completion OPT, you will only have 8 months of post-completion OPT available.

Step 1: Request a DSO Recommendation

Your first action item is to contact your school's Designated School Official (DSO), typically found in the International Student Services Office (ISSO) or Office of International Programs. The DSO must recommend you for OPT in SEVIS before you can file with USCIS.

When to request: Contact your DSO 2 to 3 months before your intended program end date. Many schools have internal deadlines that are earlier than the USCIS deadlines, and DSO processing can take 2 to 4 weeks at larger universities.

Your DSO will typically ask you to complete an internal OPT request form and provide supporting documents such as your passport, I-94 arrival record, current I-20, and any CPT authorization records. Step 2: Receive Your OPT-Endorsed I-20

Once your DSO processes your request, they will update your SEVIS record and issue a new I-20 with an OPT recommendation printed on page 2. This is a critical document — your USCIS application cannot proceed without it.

What to verify on your new I-20:

The OPT recommendation section on page 2 shows the correct requested OPT start and end dates
Your program end date (Item 5) matches your actual completion date
Your major field of study is accurate
Your personal information (name, date of birth, country of citizenship) is correct
Your DSO has signed the I-20

Sign your I-20 in ink. On the student attestation section (page 1, bottom), you must provide a handwritten signature. Digital or typed signatures are not accepted by USCIS.

Critical deadline: Once your DSO enters the OPT recommendation in SEVIS, you have exactly 30 days to file your I-765 application with USCIS. This is the single most commonly missed deadline in the OPT process, and missing it means your DSO must cancel and re-enter the recommendation. Step 3: File Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization)

Form I-765 is the official USCIS application for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). This is where you formally request work permission from the U.S. government.

Eligibility category: For post-completion OPT, select category (c)(3)(B). For pre-completion OPT, the category is (c)(3)(A). Using the wrong category code is one of the most common reasons applications are returned or denied.

Documents You Need

Completed Form I-765 (filed online via myUSCIS or by mail)
OPT-endorsed I-20 (the new I-20 from Step 2, with your signature in ink)
All previously issued I-20s (USCIS may request these; include copies)
Passport-style photographs: Two identical color photos, 2x2 inches. Important: As of the December 2025 USCIS policy change, photos must have been taken within the last 30 days of filing, and USCIS now requires photos to be uploaded digitally for online filings rather than physically mailed.
Copy of your passport (biographical page, valid for at least 6 months)
Copy of your F-1 visa stamp (most recent)

Online vs. paper filing: USCIS strongly encourages online filing through your myUSCIS account at uscis.gov. Online filing provides immediate receipt confirmation, the ability to upload documents, and faster processing. Paper filing by mail is still accepted but adds mailing time and risk of lost documents.

Step 4: Receive Your Receipt Notice (I-797C)

After USCIS accepts your application, you will receive a receipt notice (Form I-797C) either electronically (for online filers) or by mail. This notice contains your receipt number, which typically begins with IOE (online) or MSC/LIN/SRC/EAC (paper).

Step 5: Biometrics Appointment

Since the December 2025 USCIS policy update, biometrics appointments have been reintroduced for certain I-765 applicants, including OPT applicants. You will receive an appointment notice (Form I-797C) specifying the date, time, and location of your Application Support Center (ASC) visit.

What to bring: Your appointment notice, a valid government-issued photo ID (passport), and your I-797C receipt notice.

What happens: USCIS will capture your fingerprints, photograph, and signature. The entire appointment usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, though wait times vary.

Do not miss this appointment. Failure to appear may result in your application being denied. If you have a scheduling conflict, contact the ASC or USCIS Contact Center (1-800-375-5283) as soon as possible to reschedule.

Step 6: Wait for Your EAD Card

After biometrics, USCIS will adjudicate your application. Current processing times for OPT EAD applications in 2026 are approximately 3 to 5 months from the filing date. Processing times fluctuate, so check the USCIS processing times page regularly.

During this waiting period:

You cannot work until you have your EAD card in hand and your OPT start date has arrived.
You can remain in the U.S. during the 60-day grace period after your program end date, and beyond if your OPT application is pending.
Use this time to job search. Interviewing, networking, and applying for positions do not require work authorization.

When approved, you will receive your EAD card (Form I-766) by mail. Verify all information on the card immediately upon receipt.

Step 7: Activate Your SEVP Portal

After your OPT is approved, you will receive an email from SEVP (Student and Exchange Visitor Program) with instructions to create your SEVP Portal account. You must activate this portal within 10 days of receiving the email.

Through the SEVP portal, you are required to:

Report your employer name, address, and start date
Update your personal address within 10 days of any move
Report any changes in employment (new job, job loss, employer change)

Failure to maintain your SEVP portal with accurate information can result in the termination of your OPT and F-1 status. Once your OPT starts, your 90-day unemployment clock begins, so reporting employment promptly is essential.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Missing the 30-day filing deadline after receiving your OPT-endorsed I-20. Mark the date on your calendar immediately.
Selecting the wrong eligibility category on Form I-765. Post-completion OPT is (c)(3)(B), not (c)(3)(A).
Forgetting to sign the I-20 in ink. Both you and your DSO must sign.
Using expired or non-compliant photos. Under the December 2025 policy, photos must be taken within 30 days of filing.
Filing outside the allowed window. You must file no earlier than 90 days before your program end date and no later than 60 days after.
Not keeping copies of everything. Photocopy or scan every document you submit. You will need these records for future immigration applications.
