When to Start: 3 to 4 Months Before Graduation

While USCIS has its own filing windows, your personal timeline should begin 3 to 4 months before your program end date. This accounts for the time your DSO needs to process your OPT recommendation (often 2 to 4 weeks at larger schools), plus the time you need to gather documents and prepare your I-765 filing.

Here is a practical pre-filing timeline:

4 months before graduation: Contact your international student office. Ask about their internal OPT request deadlines and required forms.
3 months before graduation: Submit your internal OPT request to your DSO with all required documents.
2 to 2.5 months before graduation: Receive your OPT-endorsed I-20 from your DSO.
Within 30 days of receiving I-20: File Form I-765 with USCIS. Do not wait until the last day.

Key Filing Windows You Must Know

The 90-Day / 60-Day Window

Current OPT Processing Times (2026)

What to Do If Your Application Is Delayed

If your case has been pending longer than the posted processing times, take these steps in order:

Check your case status online. Use your receipt number at egov.uscis.gov/casestatus. Look for any status updates, requests for evidence (RFE), or notices you may have missed.
Submit an e-Request. If your case is outside normal processing times, submit an inquiry through the USCIS e-Request system at egov.uscis.gov/e-request.
Request expedited processing. USCIS allows expedite requests under certain circumstances, including severe financial loss, emergencies, and humanitarian reasons.
