USCIS permits self-employment on OPT. You may freelance, work as an independent contractor, or start your own business. 5. Unpaid Internships and Volunteering

Unpaid work qualifies as valid OPT employment if it is directly related to your major and you work at least 20 hours per week. This is an important safety net: if you cannot find paid work immediately, an unpaid internship in your field stops the unemployment clock. You must still report unpaid positions in the SEVP Portal.

6. Staffing and Temp Agencies
