Chapter 21
Handling Employment Gaps and Visa Transitions
Why Gaps Scare Recruiters (And Why They Shouldn't)
Employment gaps trigger a simple fear in recruiters: "Was this person not good enough to stay employed?" For international candidates, gaps are overwhelmingly caused by factors that have nothing to do with competence — visa processing delays, OPT application timelines, country transitions, or regulatory waiting periods. But a recruiter scanning 200 resumes will not pause to figure out why your gap exists unless you make the reason immediately clear.
The good news: once a recruiter understands a gap is visa-related or transition-related, the concern evaporates. The challenge is communicating that quickly and professionally, both on your resume and in conversations.
