The Argonne QIS Group in MSD and Q-NEXT is looking for a candidate to fill a pre-doctoral researcher role to help with optical measurements of spin qubits in various material host systems. A successful candidate should have completed a minimum of undergraduate degree (masters preferred) in quantum information science, physics, electrical engineering or related field. They should be familiar with quantum mechanical concepts with demonstrated proficiency with laser physics, optics, pulsed microwave experiments, python automation, and spectroscopy would be preferred. The project will focus on the development of optical microscopy experiments and running experiments to probe spin-physics phenomena of defect-based spin qubits in materials like diamond and silicon carbide. The project will leverage precisely timed laser and microwave pulses, operation of a 4K cryostat, measurement automation using python, and advanced quantum control pulse sequencing. Primary responsibilities: - Primarily experimental lead on complex confocal microscopy experiments to study the spin physics of defects in various material host materials. - Make contributions to experimental apparatus including alignment, automation, and quantum control. - Contribute to the ongoing efforts to provide a safe and inclusive work environment for all, including involvement in ongoing workforce development, including mentorship opportunities. - Build and maintain a working knowledge of technological tools. - Participate in writing scientific papers, experimental progress reports, document technical developments, driving new initiatives, and presenting results. **Position Requirements** - Recently completed Masters degree in related field - Knowledge and experience with lasers and optics - Experience with pulsed laser systems is desired - Knowledge and familiarity with microwave and quantum control electronics - Knowledge and familiarity with cryogenics, vacuum systems - Demonstrated skill in written and oral comm
